(Elk Crème Anglaise Jame Sage) Framed by minty green foliage, the blossoms of Salvia x 'Elk Crème Anglaise' transition from dreamy pale pink throats to white skirts. They look delectable.
Elk Crème Anglaise Jame Sage is one of our Rainbow Sages, which means it is a Salvia x jamensis hybrid developed in the plant breeding program at Flowers by the Sea Farm. Native to Mexico and the American Southwest Jame Sages occur where the closely related species of Autumn Sage (Salvia greggii) and Mountain Sage (Salvia microphylla) meet, such as in our test gardens or Mexico's Sierra Madre mountains. Their parentage may include other types of sages as well, which creates a broad range of sizes.
For example, Elk Crème Anglaise has much larger flowers than most kinds of Jame Sage and is highly floriferous. It also grows wider than its height - an unusual trait for a Salvia x jamensis and one that increases its effectiveness as a groundcover in settings ranging from full sun to partial shade. Other ideal uses include container and border plantings. It can be grown as a perennial in areas where winters are mild and as an annual in chillier locations.
Additional characteristics that make Elk Crème Anglaise so appealing are the pleasant fragrance of its foliage as well as its heat tolerance, drought resistance, and long bloom time. Bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds all love it.
