(Arctic Blaze® Purple Sage) Bred to be a strong grower while remaining hardy, this new hybrid Sage has some of the best characteristics of both of it's famous parents. Pollen from
Salvia microphylla 'San Carlos Festival' was used on flowers of
Salvia lycioides x greggii 'Ultra Violet' and one of the resultant seedlings became Arctic Blaze Purple.
San Carlos Festival is a superior cultivar, with a tidy habit and attractive foliage. It has been one of the most popular varieties of Salvia microphylla for decades. It is a vigorous grower, and tolerant of a wide range of cultural conditions.
Ultra Violet is a smallish plant, at home in the dry Western states but less successful where the summers are wet and humid. It is late to grow in the spring and intolerant of wet winters. It is however particularly hardy, and has an unusual and attractive floral color.
Arctic Blaze Purple has some of the best characteristics of both parents: great foliage, fast and early growth, beautiful flower color and hardiness to Zone 6. Many will find it much easier to grow than Ultra Violet and almost as tough as San Carlos Festival.
New at Flowers by the Sea in 2018.
The name of this plant on its patent is Salvia 'Novasalpur'. Arctic Blaze is a registered trademark of Starr Roses and Plants.
