Allen Chickering Sage is a native of California's coastal scrub lands and was introduced to commercial cultivation by Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden. Chickering was an early 20th century chairman of Rancho Santa Ana's board, who was instrumental in fostering RSABG's collection and storage of California native seed stock.

An effective tall groundcover, this drought- and heat-tolerant sage also works well as a border, background or screen in native plant gardens and dry landscapes. Butterflies, honeybees and hummingbirds are all attracted to it. Songbirds find cover and tasty seeds amid its branches.

Allen Chickering Sage has an upright, mounding form. It isn't picky about type of soil and needs little watering. It grows well in full sun, especially in coastal areas with mild winters.
